Oversized Felt Pet Beds for the European Market: A Spec Walkthrough
What "reads like furniture" means on a spec sheet: footprint, rim height, base stiffness, fabric weight and colour — plus the two problems oversized beds bring.

"Reads like furniture" is the phrase that opens most European pet bed briefs we receive. It is a useful sentence — but it is not a spec. Somewhere between that sentence and a purchase order sit five parameters, and two problems that only show up once the bed is big.
Here is the walkthrough we send before quoting.
Furniture-Like, in Five Parameters
Parameter | What it sets | What we ask you |
Footprint | Where the bed fits in the room and how it reads in a catalogue shot | The diameter you want, and the shelf or floor space it must survive |
Rim height | How the pet gets in, and how much the bed holds its shape visually | Low, or a number in centimetres |
Base stiffness | Whether the bed keeps a clean line or slumps after a month | Firm panel, or a softer couch-like settle |
Fabric weight | Hand-feel, drape and how the surface wears | A target in gsm, or a sample to match |
Colour system | Whether it disappears into a room or stands in it | Undyed, a neutral palette, or a Pantone reference |
None of these is exotic. What makes the bed read as furniture is that all five point the same way: large footprint, low rim, firm base, heavy fabric, colour that matches the room instead of the pet aisle.
The Two Problems Size Brings
Shape keeps or it doesn't. At small diameters, dense felt holds an edge on its own. Past a certain footprint, the base needs a stiffener and the rim needs its own construction, or the line sags where the pet leans. This is the trade to settle at sampling: the softer the couch feel, the more the structure has to work underneath. We build the sample both ways if the brief is ambiguous — it costs a few days and saves a re-order.
The container fills faster than the order does. Volume grows faster than diameter: a bed with twice the diameter of a small one takes far more than twice the container space, and an oversized bed nests less than a small one ever will. We model the loading at the quoting stage, not after, so the unit price you see already carries the freight it deserves.
Caring for a Felt Surface
Felt is a non-woven sheet, so there is no loop pile for hair and claws to catch in. Hair sits on the surface and lifts off; a vacuum or a damp cloth handles the daily round.
For washing, the honest answer: spot cleaning is the default. A fully removable, washable cover is possible, but it adds seams, cost and a zip, and most European briefs drop it once they see the trade. If your customer profile expects machine washing, say so at the spec stage — it changes the construction, not only the cover.
On wear: felt surface pills where a pet circles in the same spot, and the density you choose decides how fast. Higher gsm wears slower and ships heavier. That is the same trade in two directions, and it is yours to set.
What We Settle on the Sample
The sample is where the five parameters stop being numbers and start behaving. Four checks decide whether it matches the brief:
- The line under load. A pet leans where it sleeps. Load the base off-centre and watch whether the rim keeps its line — this is where base stiffness proves itself or fails.
- The entry. Rim height on paper means nothing until the entry gesture works. Low enough to step over, high enough to read as a bed.
- The hand. Fabric weight shows in drape. Fold a corner over and see whether it falls the way the reference does — the same gsm in two densities wears differently.
- The colour in room light. Undyed felt shifts between daylight and a warm retail fixture. Check it under the light your catalogue shoots in, not ours.
Fixing these on the sample costs days. Fixing them after bulk costs the order.
MOQ and Sampling
Sampling runs 7–10 days from a confirmed spec. MOQ starts at 100 pieces per colour. Send a reference photo, the diameter, and the price band you need to land at — you get feasibility and a quote within 24 hours, including the container count for your market.
Where the positioning logic comes from is in our note on market positioning, finished fabric products are grouped in our collections, and the custom request form sits on our custom design page.
